Let me take you on a little journey, the journey of a curly kid who grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark, where curls were far from the norm. Yep, that curly kid was me, the CEO of Fehmale.
The struggle was real. Growing up with a Danish Caucasian mother and a Black African father, let's just say there were some...let's call them "haircare challenges." My parents, lovely as they were, had no clue how to handle my beautiful hair strands. I was struggling with my relationship to my curls growing up. I've shed my share of tears over my curls, felt insecure, and faced my fair share of bullies who thought it was fun to pick on the girl with the "crazy" hair. That resulted in me starting to relax my hair and straightening my curls.
The turning point happened in my early 20s. Something shifted. People around me began to comment on my curls, saying they were beautiful. That's when I started to think: "Why don't I see my curls the way others do?" It was a turning point, a time of self-acceptance. Because my curls was beautiful and it was then okay for me to look different.
The curly awakening kicked in and my journey to embrace my curls began. I also got presented with all the obstacles there was connected to curly hair. I could'nt just walk into any salon and get my curls cut/done. We did'nt have many options of products based on curly formulations. Not to talk about the lack of access to the products options we did have. And no one really knew how to take care of curls, information was poor and difficult to get to.
On my curly journey I realized that it shouldn't be a struggle to have curls. Curly heads should have options and the freedom to express ourselves through our Curly Crowns.
From struggle to Fehmale: over almost a decade, I learned to speak the curly language, understood how to care for my curls, and genuinely fell in love with my hair. But it wasn't easy. It took far too long to gather the knowledge I needed.
The birth of Fehmale was when I shared my advice with other curly heads who would ask me questions like, "What do you do to your curls?" "Which products do you use?" "How do you apply them?" The decision was fast made. Now, I'm on a mission to make the curly journey easier, more joyful, and less confusing for all of us. So, let's celebrate our curls.
